About me
(Sorry for the long wall of text)
My name is Will, I love programming in my free time - specifically in Rust. I've always been very techy owing to my Dad who built me and my brothers first computer with us when we were very little, he also was the person to introduce me to Linux which I now use as my daily driver operating system.
I have 2 dogs called Dora and Dottie, they are German Shorthaired Pointers and are both very lively. We have had Dora since she was a puppy and she is 9 now, despite not acting it, however Dottie was a rescue that we think is around 5 years old and we have had for 2 of those years.
Passion for programming
I love the problem solving of programming, I love the feeling of creating something and I love the creative outlet. All the programming projects I've done haven't been to progress my knowledge or build up a skillset for employment but because I just really enjoy doing it, Rust is not currently the most used language professionally but I find the low level capabilities of the language and "if it compiles it works" nature of it to make it so I never feel limited by the language. Of the demos on the site there may be buttons and links that might seem a little out of place and that is because all of these projects run on my local server just for my personal use and none were created for the purpose of sharing them. If I feel there is something I wish would work a different way or would include something else than I would rather create my own version of it and fix those flaws, learning along the way.
Linux
I started using Linux as my main OS in 2021 during the second phase of lockdowns. I'm currently using Fedora on my main PC, Debian for servers and Pop_OS! on my laptop, I've distro hopped a lot in the last 4 years but my all time favourite is Pop_OS! and their upcoming COSMIC desktop is by far the best desktop interface I've ever used on any OS. I've been daily driving it on my laptop since early pre-alpha in Feburary 2024 and have it as an alternative on my main desktop.
Privacy & Security
Privacy is something that has become more important to me in recent years, after learning about the story of Edward Snowden and doing further research into the topic. In July 2023 I undertook the task of degoogling my life which was relatively easy however a bit time consuming, I created a protonmail an switched every account I had over to use it and installed GrapheneOS on my phone. While doing all this I changed all my passwords to use randomly generated 16 characters and deleted all old and unused accounts across many platforms and social medias.
